Opening of HKCAF
Incredible Opening of Hong Kong City Art Fair, Presenting a Refined and Approachable Display of Diverse Art Forms.
On November 29, responding to the expectations of collectors, art enthusiasts, and art institutions, the 2024 Hong Kong City Art Fair officially opened its first day for collector previews. Nearly 30 galleries, institutions, and artists from around the world showcased significant works by important artists in a vibrant opening.
Distinct from traditional outdoor exhibitions and typical display formats, the 2024 Hong Kong City Art Fair is held at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, one of Hong Kong’s most favored venues. Both the organizers and exhibitors are dedicated to creating an independent, elegant, refined, and intimate art fair space, allowing attendees to experience artworks as if they were in their own homes, naturally fostering a warm atmosphere.
Numerous institutions from around the globe presented nearly a thousand outstanding pieces covering various forms of art including painting, sculpture, jewelry, decorative objects, photography, and video. Some works were preemptively collected by collectors even before the exhibition opened, featuring many renowned artists.
Lanyi Culture presented original works by modern painting master Marc Chagall and realism giant Ilya Repin; Muse Garden showcased the work “Green Cello” by famous Chinese oil painter Ning Kong, which is also being auctioned online on WhatsBid. KingsArts brought works from three artists including Hong Kong comic legend Wong Yuk-long; among them, Xu Liang’s pieces have garnered significant attention in recent years, with some being collected during the pre-sale phase. Create Drive and Ryuvision Holding Limited presented a dialogue between traditional art and contemporary culture.
Several participating institutions featured vibrant group exhibitions showcasing diverse practices in various materials by their represented artists. Nancy's Gallery presented mixed media works by artists such as Xiao Ying, Magdalena Kleszyńska, and Hu Ling; Encounter, Shenzhen Qilu Academy of Calligraphy and Painting, and KWA Architects Limited showcased ink works by numerous artists from across Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
The “Gallery Collections” section saw local Hong Kong gallery AONC and Fujian’s SEEWELL International Art Center presenting diverse creations from their new and established artists; Tanya Baxter Contemporary, CAF Special Project, and Fantasia showcased classic works by their represented artists.
In the “Oriental Aesthetics” section, A&C presented mineral rock color creations by artist Zhang Nan; Chung Wui Gallery displayed classic meticulous brushwork pieces. As a special unit of this exhibition, the “International Contemporary Women's Art” section collaborated with female artists Wang Haiying, Yulia Shautsukova Art, and Zhao Fang to present women’s artistic practices and expressions from unique perspectives. Top Dream World is the only booth dedicated to non-professional works, featuring dozens of innocent creative expressions from youth and children that showcase the pure joy art brings to humanity. Jiabao Pavilion and the Italian jewelry brand ANGELETTI Rome present dazzling jewelry collections; Venture Studios showcased beautiful images captured in past recordings to tell stories through visuals.
The first day of the art fair also launched exciting art talks running concurrently with the fair. The first talk invited Professor Gu Yue from the Macau University of Science and Technology to discuss the paradigm shift of Art Basel within the context of contemporary curatorial perspectives in Hong Kong; ARK Wealth Management shared insights on the relationship between art and wealth. Over the next two days, four more art talks will be held at the fair on the sixth floor of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. We sincerely invite you to come to visit us.
